Lake Roosevelt High School's track and field did well in meets in Manson and Quincy in the last week, drawing attention from competing schools. At the Manson Small Schools meet April 18, LR's distance team of Logan Marconi and Caden Portch took first and second place, respectively, in the 1,600-meter race. Marconi ran it in five minutes, 16.05 seconds. Portch crossed the finish line in 5:21.16. "It is exciting to see our distance runners' hard work in practice pay off in meets," commented Head...
The Raiders beat the Tonasket Tigers 5-1 in the first baseball game of a doubleheader Saturday, but lost the second 7-4. The win was their only one of the week, with another loss to the Tigers April 18, and to Manson on April 20. Lake Roosevelt, with a 7-10 season win-loss record, lost Tuesday night to league-leading Brewster, which is currently ranked second in the state. The two teams will meet for a doubleheader in Brewster April 28 to complete the regular season....
Running in with a movie script-like ending, Sawyer Steffens crossed home plate after her hit over the fence for the Lake Roosevelt Lady Raiders' second win in Saturday's doubleheader against Omak in Grand Coulee. Lake Roosevelt edged out the Omak Pioneers 6-5 in the first game, 5-4 in the second. "What Sawyer did in that second game was what most kids dream of," Coach Jaci Gross said. "Bottom of the seventh, two outs, and a walk-off homerun. It was something I will never forget." Aspen Smith...
Lake Roosevelt’s track and field athelets traveled to Davenport and Kittitas last week, placing well in both events. Davenport’s April 11 event was fast and fun, coach Lori Adkins said, where points were only given to first, second and third place finishes. “It was a great way to begin our two-meets-a-week section of the season.” Carly Neddo took second place in the shot put and in the javelin with her season’s best throw. Raeley Portch placed third in the 300-meter hurdles. Logan Marconi took three third places: in the long jump, the 800-m...
After a week of holding two opponents scoreless in four games, the Lady Raiders ended their last game too early Friday when Presley Steffens suffered a broken leg. It happened at Liberty Bell High School, where Steffens was making a play at second base to put out a runner who slid into her. Steffens suffered a complete break of both the major bones in her lower leg and won't be playing the rest of the season. The game, the second of a doubleheader, was called at the bottom of the second inning....
The Raiders won two and lost two baseball games in the last week, starting with a 7-4 loss at home against Liberty Bell March 28. At Liberty Bell on Friday afternoon, the Raiders had a chance to figure out the Mountain Lions, but it took two games. Lake Roosevelt lost the first game by the same score they lost with on Tuesday, 7-4. The Raiders came together in the second game,...
Raider track and field athletes have competed in two meets since the last week of March. At Ephrata’s big Ray Cross Invitational March 25, Raiders met athletes from 30 schools ranging in size from 1B to 4A. “Our athletes competed well in our first outing, setting themselves up nicely within the District 6 rankings,” Head Coach Lori Adkins said. Carly Neddo placed 6th in the Javelin putting the LRHS girls’ team on the scoreboard. Her throw nearly matched her personal best from last year. Lake Ro...

The Raiders have racked up three baseball wins and three losses this season with two of those losses to Okanogan in three games over the last week. Lake Roosevelt went down 9-2 against the Bulldogs March 21 in Okanogan, then lost 15-3 in the first game of a doubleheader with them at home on Saturday. The Raiders rallied for the second game to take it 7-4, plying both defense and offense - and even a little drama, or comedy, depending on how you look at it. In early innings in game two, Bryce...
The Raider softball team scored their first win of the season Tuesday night, putting Liberty Bell's girls down 15-0. The win broke a four-game losing streak. The Lake Roosevelt Raiders took sixth place out of 54 teams at the state 2B basketball tournament in Spokane Saturday, battling through a gauntlet of teams from Wednesday on. At the Spokane Veterans Arena March 1, the Raiders met Wahkiakum at 9 a.m. at the start of four days of tough basketball every morning. Ahead at the half by one point, 29-28, LR won it in the third quarter when they gained four points more than the Mules, 16-12. The teams scored 13 apiece in the fourth for the 58-53 final....
The Napavine Tigers upset the Lake Roosevelt Raiders in the first round of the state tournament Saturday in Wenatchee, where turnovers favored the Tigers and many of LR's scoring attempts bounced off. The loss for Raiders, seeded third into the tournament, disappointed Coach Jeremy Crollard who thought the LR team would do better against Napavine, seeded sixth. "I expected more from a team who has been to state the last three years and has the experience, so knows what it takes to win,"...

The Raiders won their do-or-die crossover game Saturday in Wenatchee and will head back there to the first round of the state 2B tournament this coming weekend. Now with a 20-3 win-loss record, the Raiders' 57-41 victory over Reardan's Spirit Eagles (11-15) puts the Raiders into game three of that first round, facing the Tigers of Napavine (21-4). The game starts at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at Wenatchee High School. Ivan Alejandre led the Raiders in scoring with 28, including five...
The Lady Raiders' basketball postseason ended in Wenatchee Saturday as a nearly last-second shot bounced off the rim from almost half court. The "crossover" game in Wenatchee was a loser-out event between teams in the WIAA's Districts 6 and 7 to determine those who would go on to the first round of the state tournament. Lake Roosevelt took on the Davenport Lady Gorillas, whose 6-3 post proved a decisive factor with an accurate lob in the final seconds for their 45-43 win. The Lady Raiders' poor...
The Lake Roosevelt Raider boys' wrestling team finished in 11th place out of 45 teams at the state tournament in the Tacoma Dome Saturday, taking a third place and two sixths, and an LR girl also took a sixth. Rodger Cate took third at his 106-weight category, pinning Darrington's Creed Wright. He 15-pointed Warden's Castro and pinned Reardan's Matusik. Kalama's Suzara got an 11-7 decision over him. At 145, Christian Carson took sixth place. He won by a 12-7 decision over Chewelah's Dakota...
With a blood-pumping finish, the Lake Roosevelt Raiders came back from an eight-point deficit with under three minutes left in the game against Brewster to claim the District 6 basketball championship Saturday night at Omak. With LR down 61-53 with 2:47 left in the game, Coach Jeremy Crollard called a time out, and the Raiders switched to a press to stop the Bear advance. Brandon Pino sunk a free throw, then added a trey to cover half their deficit. Chase Clark, open at the top of the key,...
The Lady Raiders took second in the District 6 championship game in Omak Friday, falling to Okanogan, the top-rated 2B team in the state. "That was the competition we needed," said Coach Melissa Meza, a reference to the two-tiered nature of District 6, with Okanogan's 21-1 overall win-loss record, Lake Roosevelt's 15-8, and Brewster's 13-8 setting them apart from everyone else. Cylia St. Pierre took top scoring honors for LR, but the Lady Bulldogs kept her to 12. Carly Neddo put in nine;...
Don’t be alarmed if you hear a lot of sirens Thursday morning about 11, but look outside and cheer. Several Raider wrestlers will be headed to state, with an escort out of town by police cars and fire engines. The Raider boys’ team took fifth at the WIAA 1B/2B/1A/2A Region 4 tournament last week, and five of them will compete in the Mat Classic state tournament in Tacoma. Two LR girls will also head to the state event. Rodger Cate took the regional championship at 106 pounds last weekend and will try for his second state championship in Tac...
Raider Rodger Cate was named an "Athlete of the Week" last Friday by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, which picks high school student athletes across all sports and school sizes in the state to honor each week. And that was before he won the wrestling championship for WIAA's Region 2 at 106 pounds for 2B schools. The award sponsored by Gesa Credit Union notes that Cate, a Colville tribal member, made history last year by winning the WIAA 1B/2B State title at 106 pounds in...
