After a blowout victory Tuesday against Manson, the Lady Raiders faced a challenge in the Oroville Hornets Friday at home in front of a large crowd.
Lake Roosevelt had to respond to the Hornets’ tenacity and overcome their comeback attempts.
Neither team gained the upper hand in the first quarter until the end when the momentum swung to the Lady Raiders who held onto it through the second quarter for a 35-22 cushion going into halftime.
The Hornets adjusted after the half and roared back in the third, dashing LR’s lead.
Unsettled by the Hornet shifts, LR’s rebounding became an issue and their offense had trouble making shots.
By the end of the third it was a game again, with the score 44-39 for LR.
In the fourth period, the Hornets continued to command the momentum, tying it up on a three-point play (basket plus free throw).
That’s when Briana Monaghan lit a fire for the Lady Raiders. On a Dominique Pleasants assist, Monaghan banked a three to put the Lady Raiders back in the lead. From then on it was back and forth with the game tying up again at 50 all with 2:06 left in the game.
LR’s girls stayed cool, played stiff defense and made their shots to hold on for the 56-50 win.
The Lady Raiders had beaten the Trojans of Manson Tuesday in an 88-13 whipping.
Raider Head Coach Wallace Pleasants began emptying his bench in the second quarter, before a 54-4 halftime lead.
Every girl on the varsity roster for LR played siginficant minutes and 10 scored in the game.
The Lady Raiders were scheduled to play the Bridgeport Fillies last night in Bridgeport.
The Lady Raiders return to their home court on Friday to play the Pateros Nannies at 6 p.m.
LR beat Pateros 62-42 at Pateros in their previous meeting.
