A look at the past

Ten Years Ago

Last night a project to connect the water in Electric City’s aquifer to Grand Coulee’s water supply might have taken one step closer to reality. The Electric City town council voted unanimously last night to allow Mayor Ray Halsey to sign a documental agreement. If Grand Coulee also approves, representatives will decide on how the two towns can best share, or inter-tie, their water systems.

Twenty Years Ago

Electric City will now pay extra for a door included in the contractor’s original bid for its new fire station, but Mayor Ray Halsey promised last night he wouldn’t okay anymore structural changes to the building during the rest of the construction.

The Planet Earth Players is holding auditions for its spring performance of the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” Jan. 29 and 30 at the Village Cinema.

Jeff and Lisa Loe of Coulee Dam are proud to announce the birth of their son, Tanner Christian Loe, born Jan. 6, at 8:19 a.m. at Sacred Heart Medical Center. He joins a sister, Jessica, four years old, at home.

Larry Hall, 43, of Elmer City, is the newest member of the Coulee Dam Police Department.

Thirty Years Ago

Coulee Playland area on Banks Lake has been alive with a variety of recreationalists using the frozen lake for many events. Some are snowmobiling while pulling ice skaters and sleds and others are skiing and skating.

The GCD Area Girl Scouts held a sledding party for scouts and families recently with over 60 people in attendance.

Working hours will be cut back to 32 per week for 210 Colville tribal employees immediately. The tribal Business Council took the action in an effort to save money and meet budget.

Forty Years Ago

At the last meeting of the Electric City Council, a call for bids for the drilling of a new city well was authorized. The site will be near the old Hudnall well according to Deputy City Clerk Angela Hirst.

The terrific windstorm of Jan. 8 blew down an old landmark in the Rex area. The windmill at the old Max Cunningham place toppled in the storm.

Fifty Years Ago

As an organizational project, faculty of the GCD Unit of WEA are collecting and packing used textbooks and classics for shipment to schools in Asiatic countries where there is dire need .

Jonnalu Gigous of Coulee Dam and Wanda Noggles of Grand Coulee entered Kelsey-Baird Secretary School in Spokane last week.

Sixty Years Ago

The annual banquet and election of officers of the Musicians’ Protection Union of Grand Coulee Dam will be held Jan. 24 at the Dog House Cafe in Grand Coulee. Matt Snyder is chairman and in charge of arrangements for the banquet.

The Division Street Fire Ladies will meet Monday at the fire hall in Grand Coulee. Edna Flowers and Donna Hartig are hostesses.

The Lady Lions had a dinner meeting Monday night at the Wildlife Cafe with Mrs. Will Hayes as hostess.
