Harrell receives achievement medal

The Department of the Air Force awarded Staff Sergeant Nathan A. Harrell the Air Force Achievement Medal for Outstanding Achievement from Feb. 25, 2011, to July 1, 2011.

Harrell distinguished himself by outstanding achievements as a U-2 and Global Hawk Fuels Systems repair craftsman, 380th Expeditionary Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 380th Expeditionary Maintenance Group, 380th Air Expeditionary Wing, A1Dhafra Air Base, United Arab Emirates.

During this period, in support of operations Enduring Freedom, New Dawn and Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa, Sgt. Harrell demonstrated vast technical expertise while trouble shooting an elusive fuel imbalance anomaly, the Air Force states in a press release. He quickly isolated and repaired a faulty float switch, returning the aircraft to mission-capable status in less than 72 hours, and ultimately contributing to the unit’s overall 92-percent mission effectiveness rate.

Additionally, as support section technician, Sgt. Harrell deftly managed over $4 million dollars in tools, test equipment and hazardous materials while completing over 500 inspections, thereby contributing to the generation of 205 combat sorties, over 4,000 flying hours and the collection of 31,000 images.

He also displayed great poise under pressure while responding to an Emirati F-16 hydrazine spill. He quickly assessed the scene and ensured the safety of the pilot, host nation aircraft and surrounding area, resulting in zero injuries or aircraft damage.

Harrell is the son of Melvin Harrell of Grand Coulee and the late Mary Harrell.
