Tennis has soggy opening

The rain caused an early end to the opening matches of the season against Tonasket at the LR tennis courts last Saturday, ending the one good match the Raiders had for the day.

“Our one bright spot was Brandin Smith, who did not get to finish his match because of rain,” Head Coach Steve Archer commented. “Hopefully we will fare better against the other schools in our league.”

Smith won the first set in his singles match against Colton Leep 6-3. When the second match ended due to the rain, the score was 3 all.

In the other boys’ action, Phoenix Shepard lost in straight sets to Anthony Verhasselt 6-0, 6-0. Nick Rice also had a tough start, losing to Brian Hendrick 6-0, 6-0.

Hayden Rodrigues fought back but it was not enough to overcome Trevor Terris, losing 6-1, 6-2.

On the girls’ side, the lack of experience noted by Archer showed through on Saturday.

In singles action, Nichole Baker lost to Michelle Timmerman 6-0 in both sets. Hillery Carriere lost to Claire Thornton 6-1 in both sets.

In doubles, the Lady Raiders are still learning and improving, both teams lost with the team of Regine Wilson and Hayley Seylor playing only one game, as the second was rained out. The tennis squad took on White Swan last night in White Swan.

The Raider tennis squad returns to the LR courts to take on Okanogan tomorrow in a match starting at 4:30 p.m.
