Tennis splits week

Raider tennis played two matches last week, traveling to Wilson Creek on Monday and at home on Thursday against Entiat.

At Wilson Creek, both the boys and girls posted team victories with the LR boys winning four matches and the girls three.

Phoenix Shephard dispatched Adolfo Fernadez eaily in two matches 6-1, 6-1. Hayden Rodrigues battled hard after losing the first match, winning the second 7-6, but dropping the overtime match 7-4 to Brandon Berneski.

Nick Rice and the doubles teams won by forfeit.

Emily Williams won in singles action over Samantha Dowers 8-1. As on the boys’ side, the girls doubles team won by forfeit.

Wilson Creek was a confidence booster for the Raiders, then the Tigers of Entiat provided higher quality opponents. Both squads lost to the Tigers, the boys 2-3; the girls 1-4.

In singles action, newcomer Shundina Spencer provided the girls with their only win, defeating Talia Oldham 9-7.

Spencer, said Head Coach Steve Archer, “has been really coming on. She was behind early in the match, caught up and passed her opponent in the end for the win."

The boys had two wins in singles play: Phoenix Shephard blanked Noe Quezada 6-0 in both sets and Nick Rice steamrolled Coulter Peterson 8-0.

It was the doubles match of Nick Rice/Kayne Oberg versus Caleb Riggle/Crandy Layton that gave the match to Entiat. Since Rice had already competed as a single, his match with Oberg, no matter the outcome, would have to be forfeited to Entiat. The Rice/Oberg duo defeated Riggle/Layton 8-5.

The Raiders took on White Swan last night at home and will travel to Entiat to finish the season series Thursday in a 4 match.
