What will become of the middle school?

The community is about to face a very good problem to have.

Even as plans are made to complete a new school, an older edifice that has served for decades may still be put to good use.

The time to start thinking about what to do with the building that is the current Grand Coulee Dam Middle School is now, suggested school district Superintendent Dennis Carlson at a recent chamber of commerce meeting.

Carlson pointed out that the community has about two-and-a-half years to figure out what it will want the building to be next.

The building that began its existence as Grand Coulee High School could and should serve some other purpose now.

Possibilities discussed at the chamber meeting included a community “wellness” center where events and meetings and classes could go on.

Or how about a business incubation facility that could supply support for new business ideas until they grow strong enough to earn a profit.

What uses can you think of for a solid building with about 120,000 square feet that will need remodeling, repurposing?

As Dr. Carlson said, the time to start the discussion is now.
