Electric City seeks to fill council seat

Electric City is advertising for a person interested in serving on its city council.

The person selected will fill out the Position 4 term of Birdie Hensley, who vacated her seat earlier this month.

The council started advertising for the vacancy this week and advises those interested to submit a letter of interest to the city council no later than Monday, Sept. 24. The letter may be sent or hand delivered to city hall. Those interested, but who have questions about the appointment can call the city clerk at 633-1510 for clarification or information.

In the letter, interested parties are asked to tell why they are interested in serving on the council.

“These are interesting times,” Mayor Jerry Sands stated.

With water rates increasing and the council about ready to declare a “transportation benefit district,” which would enable the city to charge a $20 vehicle license tab fee, there are a number of important issues before the council.

Both are considered “hot button” items for a new council member to be involved in.

Hensley resigned earlier this month, stating in her letter to the mayor and council that she thought she could get more done as a private citizen than by being on the council.

Hensley joined the council in 2006, when she was named to replace Bill Vancik, who had resigned. She ran for a full term and was elected in 2011.

The person will be selected from among those submitting letters and will fill out Hensley’s term.
