Fire contained

The Barker Canyon Complex fire was declared 100 percent contained at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Grand Coulee Volunteer Fire Chief Rick Paris stated that the fire was turned back to local fire groups and they will be carrying out patrols through the week. Paris said if fire is seen people should call 911 immediately with information on location.

No dog exchange

A pet adoption event scheduled for next Sunday, Sept. 23, has been cancelled. Chris Holeman said Adams County Pet Rescue authorities thought the event would be inappropriate so soon after major fires in the area.

Rupe appointed

Bob Rupe has been named as Electric City’s representative to Grant Transit Authority board. He replaces Birdie Hensley who recently resigned from the council. Rupe had served on the board in previous years.

Young Life has a place

Elmer City’s council approved the use of their community room to Jeramiah Seekins and his Young Life group at its meeting Thursday night. The group supplies insurance on its activities and pays $20 a month for use of the room.

going at schools

The Grand Coulee Dam School District board dealt with two resignations and several new hires at its meeting Monday night.

Resigning were Joette Barry as Lake Roosevelt SAFTYE director, and Karyn Byam as Center School secretary and lunch and attendance. Hired were Pat Sherratt, assistant cook; Dean McPherson, assistant maintenance; Elizabeth Spencer, middle school Title/LAP paraprofessional; Carol Estrada, Center School Sped paraprofessional; Jennika Hill, Center School Sped paraprofessional; Julie Friedlander, Middle School Sped paraprofessional; Mary Schilling, PLTW director and administrative assistant; and Sue Hayes, LRHS honor society advisor.

FTEs down at school

The Grand Coulee Dam School District showed 603.71 full time equivalent students for the September count, which occurs on the fourth day of school. Last year’s September count was 636, and the budget projection for September 2012 is 610. Superintendent Dennis Carlson said the district expects the numbers will increase as the month progresses.

The Grand Coulee Dam School District’s application for the $1 million grant for Indian Children programs, awarded recently by the Department of Education, ranked eighth out of 124 applicants. The Department of Education funded the top 12 school districts.

Pasta success

The Rotary Club’s spaghetti feed fund raiser took in approximately $2,000, President Jerry Kennedy estimated following the Friday night feed. That, along with an additional $5,000 grant just announced by the Columbia Basin Foundation, could make finishing the club’s long-sought handicapped-accessible fishing pier a reality, Kennedy said. The club’s board meets next week.

Good month of revenue

A good month at the Delano Transfer Station put the system ahead of last year’s receipts for the first eight months of the year. The transfer station did $46,041 of business compared to last year’s $42,347 for August.
