Obituary

Joyce Irene McCorkle, 89, of Smelterville, Idaho, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at her home in Smelterville. She was born April 17, 1923, in Edmonton, England, the daughter of Charles and Ethel Ida (Carter) Hills.

Joyce attended and graduated from Freemantle High School of Freemantle, Western Australia. She married Thomas Pettit on Nov. 27, 1943, in Perth, Western Australia; they later divorced. She then married Wallace Oberg in 1952 in Superior, N.D .; they later divorced. Joyce moved to the Silver Valley in 1948 from North Dakota. She married Samuel McCorkle on July 21, 1957, in Superior, Mont.Samuel passed away in 1992.

Joyce had served as a cook at the Sunshine Inn of Kellogg and for many other restaurants from Wallace to Rose Lake. She was one of the best known cooks in the Silver Valley and was very proud of the fact that she worked until the age of 83. Joyce was famous for her pastries and heavenly cinnamon rolls.

She was a member of the Pythian Sisters and in her earlier years was an avid bowler for 30 years. She was also a member of the Smelterville Lions Club and she proudly served as the Lions reigning queen. While residing in Australia, Joyce was a member of the Salvation Army Marching Band and had taught Sunday School for many years.

Joyce loved and enjoyed her family, sewing – she had sewn many of her family members’ clothes – crocheting, crafts, dancing, gambling, darts and camping. She also loved jewelry and bling, purses and shoes.

Joyce is survived by 10 children: Ray (Donna) Pettit of Boise, Idaho, LaRayne (Dave) Duthie of Cataldo, Idaho, Terry Pettit of Boise, Howard Pettit of Pinehurst, Idaho, Bob (Lorna) Oberg of Grand Coulee, Vicki Oberg of Medical Lake, Bill (Terri) McCorkle of Pine Creek, Idaho, Rick McCorkle and Mandy of Pinehurst, Leanne (Blair) Schonewald of Smelterville, and Shanon Figueroa of Pinehurst; two stepchildren: Sammie Dean (Billie) McCorkle of Tampa, Fla., and Laura (Hans) Pederson of Spearfish, S.D .; 28 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; she is also survived by one sister, Ida Hooker of Perth, Western Australia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Samuel McCorkle, one son David McCorkle, one brother Jim Hills, stepdaughter Iona Hahn, son-in-law Rick Figueroa and daughter-in-law Kathy Pettit.

Cremation was held and memorial services were held Oct. 5 at the Mountain View Congregational Church (formerly the United Church of Kellogg) in Kellogg. Inurnment will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery of Kellogg. A reception for family and friends was held at the Kellogg Elks following services. Everyone was welcome.
