A look at the past

Ten Years Ago

A group trying to bring a swimming pool back to the Grand Coulee area recently received gestures of support that could bring them closer to their goal. The town councils of Elmer City and Coulee Dam voted last week to support the forming of a joint parks and recreation district.

People in the Grand Coulee Dam area who do not like driving themselves to Spokane, but still need to go, will soon have a way to get there without paying a cent. The non-profit People for People announced Monday that they will offer round-trip bus service from Coulee Dam to Spokane twice a day. The service begins Feb. 21 and runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Twenty Years Ago

Continuing frigid weather in the Pacific Northwest has pushed power demands to a new record for one local utility and forced the Bonneville Power Administration to limit power to industrial customers.

Elvis Presley may be dead, but don’t say that too loudly to some local residents who are not immune to Elvis fever, a condition which caused many of them to line up at area post offices Friday when the new commemorative Elvis stamp went on sale.

Thirty Years Ago

Coulee Dam Police Chief Tom Edwards announced the appointment of James Eley as an officer on the city police force. He replaces Kevin Derick who has been transferred to the coast.

A striking two-piece logo symbolizing 50 years of accomplishments in the Columbia Basin Project has been issued by a committee planning the celebration of the start of construction of the Grand Coulee Dam in 1933.

Winners in the Voice of Democracy Contest this year were Alicia McKissen, Mark Berry, Holly Campbell, Colette Helseth, Laurie Maciajewski, Tiffany Grier, Michelle Long, Kelly Snow, Tamara Depew and Leanne Lambert.

Forty Years Ago

Mrs. Charles Wendt of Coulee Dam and Mrs. Morris Foley of Wilbur gave a musical workshop at the home of Mrs. Duane Childers. Performing were Maria Goodwin, Wendy Weitzel, Bradley McKay, Colleen Redamonti, Traci Simms, Peggy Patterson, Delores Childers, Carolyn Finch, Marylou Sieg, Connie McKay, Wesley Sieg and Karen Carstensens.

Fifty Years Ago

Mr. and Mrs. Roy R. Rankin, Grand Coulee, were guests of honor at an open house celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary Dec. 30.

Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Mason served a waffle supper Friday evening after the basketball game.

Floyd E. McCoy, engineman first class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.E. McCoy of Grand Coulee, is serving aboard the dock landing ship USS Fort Snelling.

Sixty Years Ago

Henry Evers has announced the engagement of his daughter, Betty to James Hagy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Hagy of Electric City.

Playing at Nespelem Tuesday night, the Coulee Dam Beavers lost to the high-flying Savages 58 to 35. Nespelem ran up a 20-5 lead in the first quarter. Leroy Sherwood scored 12 points to lead Coulee Dam while Dorland Palmer paced the Savages with 10.
