Ten Years Ago

A commercial for a car that will never be sold in the United States will feature the rolling hills and undulating roadway between Grand Coulee and Wilbur. The commercial features a young woman driving down the highway in a Hyunai Avante XD 2003. The commercial will only be shown in South Korea, where the Avante model is sold.

Some reported opposition to a new tribal language program at Skilskin High School led the teacher and organizer to defend the program Monday. Karen Condon, of the Colville Language Preservation Program, said that Ernie Brooks, who teaches the program, had been told that since he’s not a fluent speaker of the language, that he should not teach the program.

Kristen Maher and Marica Quill were chosen as music students of the month for February.

Twenty Years Ago

Planet Earth Players will be staging this weekend the musical “Anything Goes”. The play will be directed by Joan Parker.

A new gas-fired powerplant somewhere along Lake Rufus Woods could employ as many as 150 to 250 people and serve as the basis for an industrial park according to tribal business officials.

Engineers worked this weekend to bring a pilot water filtration plant online for Grand Coulee.

Thirty Years Ago

Competing in the Junior Miss Pageant this year are Kim Vordahl, Julie Castrodale, Deena Hamilton, Deana Brown, Terry Waterer and Jackie Palmer.

Winners of the bowling tournament last week were Team - The Bowling Bags: Rose Dalton, Maria Somday, Sandy Sheehy and Betty Fields; Doubles - Jean Olsen and Pat O’Conner and Penny Nee and Regina Wipple. All Events - July McGuire; Singles - LaVonne Long and Pat O’Connor.

Forty Years Ago

Kim Beesley a Washington State University sophomore from Grand Coulee has been promoted to technical sergeant in the Air Force ROTC detachment at WSU.

Two census takers are expected to complete the job of taking the census in Electric City by the end of this week.

Fifty Years Ago

Americal Legion members who were awarded 45 year plus pins included John Michaud, Karl Wedeward, Curtis Berry, Bert Hall, A.J. Sommers and J.G. Kinman.

Sixty Years Ago

Shirley Setty, Carla Weaver and Herbert Young were selected to represent Grand Coulee High School at the northwest division of Music Educators conference at Bellingham this week.

The Lady Lions met at the home of Mrs. L.F. Carlson Monday evening. Cards were played with high prize in canasta going to Mrs. Roy Bernd and keno, Mrs. Lynn Frasher.
