Baseball goes on a win streak

The Raider baseball squad went on a tear through their early season Central Washington B League opponents of Manson and Oroville. In the three games played last week by the varsity and one played by the JV all ended early because of the 10-run mercy rule.

The Raiders jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of their home game against Manson March 19. The Trojans could not get anything started against Raider pitcher Brady Black, who allowed only two hits and one earned run while striking out 10 batters in his five innings on the mound.

Black helped out his pitching performance by hitting two home runs and a double.

Justus DeWinkler went two for three at the plate with a triple and three stolen bases. Trey Nicholson hit a double and recorded two steals.

The final score in the game was LR 11, Manson 1, with the game- ending run scored on a Brady Black inside-the-park home run.

The win streak continued on Saturday as the Raiders took apart the Oroville Hornets in both games of the doubleheader. In the first game the Raiders won 11-1 with Brady Black pitching another solid performance. Kendall Piccolo and Trey Nicholson each scored two runs. Devan Black had a good day at the plate getting on base twice to set up Nicholson for the RBI opportunity.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Kendall Piccolo pitched four innings, putting up solid numbers. DeWinkler came in to finish off the Hornets in 12 pitches.

Devan Black continued to impress Head Coach Ted Piccolo as Black recorded two RBIs in the second game.

That performance was something that Coach Piccolo had been looking for. “We had been looking to improve our offensive pressure from our middle-down lineup,” he said. “On Saturday, we certainly accomplished that.”

The JV team travelled to Bridgeport on Thursday for a single game. LR dismantled the Mustangs 20-6.

The Raiders continued the win streak this week, prevailing over Pateros on Monday 7-6.

They will face Liberty Bell in a doubleheader on Friday at home. Coach Piccolo sees this doubleheader as an important one for league play. “Liberty Bell has several returning seniors, and it will be important for our younger players to continue to build on their successes,” he said.

The doubleheader starts at 4 p.m. at Greene Field.
