Duane Johnson’s statement:
1. What are the top challenges that will be faced by the office you seek to occupy?
Addressing and establishing a viable wastewater treatment facility that meets the present and future needs of our communities. Careful planning and an invitation to community partners comprised from local cities to government (Tribal, County, State, and Federal) needs to be more visible to collaboratively move forward with planning, funding, and implementation of the wastewater treatment plant. It is important for the town council to continue providing opportunities for community involvement and to report out regular progress updates.
Utility rates have risen dramatically over the years, this needs to be reviewed and wherever possible reduced.
Disaster Preparedness - It appears storms are getting stronger and we need to make sure we have a strong disaster preparedness team for the safety of our community and the Dam.
Community development - Communication with “open ears,” and a true willingness and spirit for partnership will make the difference over time. Unity of our three counties and enhancement of our community partnerships to also include local government agencies and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. This will allow us to better identify resources available to assist our community with infrastructure enhancement, economic development to include marketing for tourism, and investing in the social well being our communities.
2. What makes you the best candidate to address those challenges?
I have lived here the majority of my life and know the value, heart, and culture of our rural communities. I have board experience, comparable to a city council position, with the North Central WorkForce Development Council for over 12 years. Higher education to include a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Education degrees. Over 25 years work experience in State and Tribal Government as a counselor, supervisor, program manager and administrator. I have been successful in writing and getting grants funded. I am willing to commit my time to and for the community. I am also an Air Force veteran.
3. What in your past experience has helped prepare you to fulfill the duties of the office you are seeking?
Public speaking experience with audiences at all levels to include community, business, and management. Skillful at handling and accomplishing multiple tasks and projects. A creative problem-solver, well organized and a team player. I have worked in private for profit, public sector, state and tribal government, and self employment in small business. I am a lifelong learner having completed management and leadership trainings.
