Bert lived a full, active life filled with family and friends. He was known for his gregarious friendly nature; speaking to everyone he met, judging none. He was a devoted husband and father. Helen, his wife of 68 years, and their four children were the center of his life.
Bert was the eldest son of Alfred and Colby Johnson, born in Sebeka, Minn.
In 1941, he joined the Army Air Corps and served in the 320th Bomb Group B-26 Marauder. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and six Bronze Stars while flying 50 missions as a Top Turret Radio Gunner. Upon discharge in 1945, he returned to Sebeka, MN, where he met the love of his life, Helen Ostlund. They were married in 1946. During their early years of marriage, they lived in several states, moving to the Grand Coulee area in 1963 where he worked at The Grand Coulee Dam for 16 years. Bert retired from the Civil Service in 1979 with 30 years of service. In 2010 they moved to Wenatchee to be closer to family.
He is survived by his wife and his four children, Dennis & (Barbara) Johnson of Florida, Darlene Johnson & (Robert Norman) Wenatchee , WA, Wendy & (Kim) Beesley Gold Canyon, AZ, Don Johnson & (Kathryn McKinley) Spokane, WA, 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held at the Grand Coulee Methodist Church on April 30th at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grand Coulee Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
