Tennis wraps up regular season Readies for league tourney

Raider tennis players defeated the Wilbur-Creston Wildcats in both boys’ and girls’ play May 6 but lost to Tonasket two days later, then ended the regular season at home last night.

At Wilbur-Creston, Daniel Campobasso came from behind to win his match against Jacob Paunovich.

“Dan Campobasso was down 4-1 in the first set but then switched to another gear, grabbed the momentum and never looked back with an impressive 6-4, 6-1 win,” Head Coach Steve Archer said.

Holly Jo Carriere and Areielle White also came from behind to defeat the duo of Ireland Corrigan and Rhea Castrodale 6-4, 6-3. Tanya Ang and Harmony Witten played an exciting match that came down to tiebreakers before defeating Becca Gollehon/Cinamin Aalund.

At Tonasket, Campobasso lost the first set against Walker Marks before changing strategy.

“He changed his game plan to come into the net with an aggressive approach in the second set which turned the game around,” Archer said. “This was an impressive win because it was against Tonasket, one of the toughest teams in the A league. Dan will most likely go into the year-end league state qualifying tournament seeded at number two.”

The team of Holly Jo Carriere and Areielle White racked up their seventh doubles match victory for the season. That will set them up with a good spot in the end of season tourney. Harmony Witten played a great match in the number-one singles spot for the first time this season, barely losing.

“She is one of the best competitors on our team,” Archer noted.

On Saturday the Raiders travel to Ephrata for the Central Washington B League Tourney starting at 9 a.m. at Ephrata High School.

For the league tourney, teams may enter only two singles and two doubles per squad.

This will be the lineup for Saturday:

Boys singles: Campobasso and Brandin Smith

Boys doubles: Tyler Agosto & Edmund Fenton as number one, and Jordan Charles and Corbin Wilder as number two.

Girls singles: undecided

Girls doubles: Carriere and White as number one entry; number two - undecided

The unfilled spots were to be decided after the match against Entiat.
