Raider Tennis competed in District 6 Tournament at Cashmere last week, where their season came to an end.
The matches were close and were played to a different format than in the regular season. “The format was two out of three sets with no-add scoring, which means you only have to win games by one point,” noted Head Coach Steve Archer. “Many of the games for both Dan (Campobasso) and Holly (Carriere)/Areielle (White) went to deuce and were won by a single point.”
Campobasso played Juan Mensoza of Cascade in boys’ singles. Mensoza took the first set but Campobasso came back in the second to force a third. In the third set Campobasso played hard, and the score does not reflect how close the match was. Campobasso lost the match 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
Holly Jo Carriere and Areielle White lost their doubles match to the duo from Pateros of Morales and Rios. The girls dropped the first set to come back and win the second. In the third, Carriere and White went back and forth with Morales and Rios and again it was a close finish with Morales and Rios coming away the victors.
“These losses put them out of the tournament coming up two wins short of a state berth,” Archer said.
“I was proud of the way they all played,” Archer said.
Next year, the Raider tennis squad looks to be more experienced with a bigger squad earlier in the season. LR in Tennis already competes against Tonasket, Okanogan, and Brewster so their addition to the league is not a big change. Raider Tennis should benefit also from the increase in berths that come from the increase in schools at the B level.
