10 Years Ago

Two more Grand Coulee Dam School District jobs became vacant last week with the buyout and settlement of former Superintendent  Dennis Chambers and the resignation of Middle School Principal David Funk. Interviews for the High School Principal wrapped up this week and a selection will be made soon.

Four Nespelem School students recently returned from a trip around Washington State. They spoke of their adventures at the school board meeting last week. The students were: Meghan Palmer Francis, Bailey Ankney, Sadie Ives and Amelia McClung.

A new curfew policy for minors that would place the blame on parents instead of children is being considered by the Town of Coulee Dam. If the Ordinance is accepted and passed the towns law enforcement officers would have no problem enforcing it.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Robert DeChenne was recently selected "Sailor of the Year" at Naval Air Reserve Center, Naval Air Station, Lemoore, CA. DeChenne is a 1971 graduate of Grand Coulee High School and joined the Navy in 1973.

Electric City Mayor, Ray Halsey, will cast the deciding vote regarding a variance request from Pastor Dick Waterer of the Assembly of God Church. Waterer wants to add an addition to the church building for use as a meeting hall, recreational facility and roller skating rink. At the last council meeting a vote turned out a 2 for and 2 against vote by board members. Halsey will look into the zoning issues and variance requests and make the final vote on July 24th.

Special Achievement A-wards were handed out at the Bureau of Reclamation this week. Don Seaver's award was in recognition of outstanding performance as a craftsman while working under a variety of conditions and places and for cooperation and objectivity. Patrick Sullivan also received an award for outstanding performance and a high quality of work and knowledge.   

50 Years Ago

Highlights of the Nespelem Rodeo included Miss Grand Coulee Dam who has never been ridden, bucked off Northwest Rodeo Association 1963 Bareback champion, Buzz Sealy. Also, Blizzard, the horse nominated as bucking horse of the year for the past three years, continues to be unridden. Miss Grand Coulee Dam is owned by Danny Green of Elmer City.

Assistant Secretary of the Interior Fred Aandahl met with members of Coulee Dam's Advisory Council and USBR officials recently to discuss the Shipman report and the current legislation that proposes the sale of the Town of Coulee Dam.
