The Raider tennis team's first match on the new court surface at Lake Roosevelt was delayed an hour due to rain on Friday.
Because of the delay, Head Coach Steve Archer said, the format was changed.
"So we shortened the format by playing eight game pro-sets, instead of two-out-of-three sets," he explained.
Besides the weather, Raider Tennis was dealt another blow before the match even started. After grade checks Wednesday, seven players were declared ineligible for the match.
"The result was more than half of the varsity team is first-year players," Archer said.
The Raider boys still came away with a 3-2 win. Coach Archer said he was impressed with the playing spirit of the first-year players, noting Will Friedlander, Malcom Carson, and Aiden Derr.
On the girls' side, the Raiders could not record a victory but did have some great play. Archer pointed out Hannah Williams' play as an example of determined play. "Hannah, at number three singles, was up 7-4 but couldn't get that last game, losing in a tiebreaker 7-4," he said.
