Tennis players win some, lose some to start the season

The Lake Roosevelt Raider tennis team showed the Pateros Billygoats a lot of love in the season opener last Tuesday, sweeping them in their matches, before going to Entiat where the boys won and the girls lost.

At home against Pateros March 14, the Raiders boys won four sets, losing none. The girls won 5-0.

For the boys, Malcom Carson defeated Ivan Ceniceros 6-3 in both the first and second sets. Aidan Derr beat Jesus Mota 6-2, 6-3.

For the girls, Rylee Pitner overtook Lupe Martinez 6-2, 6-1. Alexia Ryan defeated Macayla Buckman 6-3 in both sets, and Hannah Wapato defeated Monse Hernandez 6-2 in both sets.

The Raiders traveled to Entiat Thursday, March 16 for a taste of winter’s last gasp.

“The weather was the best day yet for tennis,” remarked Head Coach Steve Archer. “But when the sun dropped below the horizon the temperature also dropped about 10 degrees.” The boys won in Entiat, going 4-1 in their sets, while the girls narrowly lost 2-3 in theirs.

In boys’ singles, Derr defeated Yancy Ayala 6-0, 6-1, and Bradley Wilder beat Jamie Padilla 8-3.

In boys’ doubles, Will Friedlander and Carson defeated Christopher Mudgett and Ayala 6-0, 6-2.

In girls’ singles, Pitner defeated Yaretzy Ayala 6-2, then 6-4. “Rylee Pitner is gaining confidence and looking stronger and stronger on her strokes,” Archer said.

Also in girls’ singles, Savannah Hobrecht defeated Neida Guerrero 8-3, and Ryan lost 6-8 to Celest McTaggart.

In girls’ doubles, Wapato and Tarissa Clark lost to Daisy Arias and Hailey Davis, 6-0 in both sets. Shay Schilling and Keziah Stice lost to Brooklyn Eisenhard and Ginny Kammeyer 9-8, then 7-4 in the tiebreaker.

“We came with in just a few points of pulling a win out,” explained Archer. “The last and deciding match was our doubles team of Shay and Keziah, both first year beginning players. They tied their match up at 8-8, which moved them into a tiebreaker to decide the match. Unfortunately we lost.”

A game against the Oroville Hornets yesterday in Coulee Dam was canceled.

The Raiders’ next match is scheduled for March 23 at Liberty Bell, and their next home event isn’t until Tuesday, April 18, hosting Entiat at 4 p.m.
