Cousins will go to state for Raider golf

The Raiders are sending sophomore cousins Darin Whiteman and Derek Whiteman to state, following a match in Oroville last week and the district tournament in Yakima.

Derek Whiteman will attend as an alternate because Darin beat him by one stroke.

In Oroville on Wednesday, May 10, the match “went fine, but it was not officially scored since the greens were under maintenance and not match ready,” Head Coach Steve Files explained. “We had gorgeous weather and used it as a nice tune-up for districts.”

Competing in the district tournament on Monday at Suntides Golf Course in Yakima, Darin Whiteman finished in fourth place with a score of 93, qualifying for the state competition. Derek Whiteman, just one stroke above Darin, finished fifth with a score of 94, and will be the first alternate from the district.

“Under great pressure, Darin and Derek both performed beautifully,” Files said. “I’m extremely proud of their effort, as well as the effort and determination displayed by our other district qualifiers: Lucas Bird, Alan Nordine, and Casey Cleveland.”

The state tournament will take place at Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland, Washington, May 22-24.
