Raiders defeat Raiders in basketball

The Lake Roosevelt Raiders defeated the Lake Roosevelt Raiders basketball team on Nov. 21. Wait, what?

That's right, the Lake Roosevelt Raiders and Lady Raiders played their Crimson & Gold games last week, in which Lady Raiders compete against Lady Raiders, and Raiders against Raiders.

With the Lady Raiders, half the girls wore grey jerseys representing the gold team, and half wore crimson jerseys. The teams were well balanced, with the Crimson team leading 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, and the Gold team leading 25-24 at the half. In the third, the Gold team pulled away, leading 40-32 at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Crimson team outscored the Gold 17-8 in the fourth quarter to win 49-48 with a last-minute lead change.

The boys did things a little differently, switching players between the Crimson and Gold teams throughout the game to test out different matchups and teammates. The boys simply had to turn their jersey inside out to switch between a crimson or gold color.

The Crimson team led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter, and the Gold led 22-20 at the half. The game finished tied at 48-48, with the referees ready to go home and simply leaving the court rather than holding an overtime.

Raider Head Coach Jeremy Crollard said the game helped him observe the strengths and weaknesses of his players.

The Raiders played their jamboree game last night, results of which will be in next week's Star.

The Raiders and Lady Raiders play their first game of the regular season this Saturday, Dec. 2, at home against the Oroville Hornets. The girls' varsity team starts at 6 p.m. and the boys' at 7:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Dec. 5, Lake Roosevelt travels to Brewster to face the Bears with the girls scheduled for 6 p.m. and the boys scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
