Raiders wrestle at subregionals, district tournaments

Raider boys wrestled in their district tournament in Oroville, and the Lady Raider wrestler at subregionals in Warden, last weekend, and every Raider wrestler placed and moves onto the regionals round, including first-placers Kaleb Horn, Tony Nichols, and Sherwin Vargas.

In Oroville on Feb. 3, the boys wrestled at their district tournament.

“We had a very successful tournament,” Head Coach Steve Hood said about all 12 Raider wrestlers moving on to regionals.

Horn, wrestling at 132 pounds, defeated Tonasket’s Brock 5-1, and Bretz 12-1, to take the district championship.

“He opened it up there,” Hood said about Horn in the finals.

Nichols, wrestling at 152, pinned Alatorre from Tonasket in the first round, then defeated Walton from Tonasket, 5-1, to place first as district champion.

“Tony turned it up,” Hood said.

Vargas wrestled at 220, where the only other wrestler on the bracket was his fellow Raider, Connor Klingenberg, whom Vargas pinned to take first, giving Klingenberg the second-place spot.

Robert Thomas, wrestling at 106, lost to Vanatta from Tonasket by pin before defeating Ambriz from Pateros, 16-4, to take third place.

Everett Schmidt, wrestling at 113, pinned Dowers from Pateros, lost to Silverthorn from Tonasket, got pinned by Brewster’s Rosario, then pinned Dowers a second time to place fifth.

In the 145 division, Ryan Moon pinned Smith from Pateros, got pinned by Wilson of Tonasket, pinned fellow Raider Tyler Palmer, then defeated Range from Oroville 8-0 to place fourth. Palmer had earlier been pinned by Range, then defeated Smith from Pateros 11-2 and placed fifth.

Wrestling at 160, freshman Dylan Wiles lost in triple overtime to Garcia from Brewster, who managed to score from the bottom position. Wiles then defeated senior Castillo from Oroville 4-3, then won 4-2 against Garcia, to whom he had lost earlier, and took third. “A very determined freshman,” Hood said about Wiles.

Moses Luevano, wrestling at 170, came from behind in the third round and pinned Garcia from Liberty Bell. Luevano then lost 4-2 to Guzman from Oroville, and lost 5-0 to Triese from Liberty Bell. Luevano placed 4th in the division.

Myka Boyd and Brandon Long, despite losing their matches, still took third place at 182 for Boyd and 195 for Long.

Ida Sue, wrestling in the girls’ sub-regional tournament in Warden Feb. 3, pinned her opponent Nepounceno from Othello, lost 12-7 to Morrow from Wenatchee, then pinned Guerra from Warden and Dahlgren from Moses Lake to take third place.

“I think she wrestled really well,” Head Coach Steve Hood said about Sue.

Sue will wrestle at the regionals tournament at East Valley High School in Spokane on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m.

The boys’ regionals tournament will be held in Kittitas on Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.
