News, views and advertising of the Grand Coulee Dam Area
People are due for both a "shock" and a "treat" with the opening of Grand Coulee's new Voltage Coffee House next week.
It may be a shock for those who remember the old Carpenter's Hall on Spokane Way, or the bakery, or the salon, all in the same building. During at least part of this time, the building was cut up into seven small rooms.
Not anymore; it has a sense of spaciousness.
The new coffee house, long the dream of owner-operator Solveig Chaffee, will also offer customers a treat when they take advantage of the coffee options, light meals and other offerings at Voltage.
You would have to know about the building's past to fully appreciate it today.
Picture Chaffee pulling up some 4,000 linear feet of four-inch flooring and sanding it all down, piece by piece. Or taking PVC pipe from the attic and twisting it into a complex and very original piece of art-like chandelier.
Everywhere you look, you will see something that came from the attic or roof, now blended into interesting and refreshing decor. Old metal roofing now provides a backdrop for the serving area, as well as the front of the counter. Wood from old ceiling beams forms table tops.
The directive here is to come in and spend a few minutes, or a couple of hours, getting a cup of coffee and relaxing for as long as you want - coffee from a regular blend or from a host of specialties.
The new place may actually feel a bit like sitting in an art gallery. Solveig plans on featuring local artists' works on the walls.
Comfortable seating areas are scattered about. Lighting ideas came from one of Chaffee's favorit stops in the Cascades.
Other ideas have been shaped by a 10-year period of wanting to do this venture.
A ribbon cutting and grand opening is set for noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28. You will have the opportunity to sample some of the product during the grand opening.
Light lunches will be created by the establishment and served Thursdays through Mondays. During summer, Voltage will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
