Raiders wield rackets well against three teams

The Raider tennis team last week squared off well against Mountain Lions, Bulldogs, and Tigers, including Alexia Ryan's two-and-a-half-hour singles match win.

In Liberty Bell on April 24, the Raider boys tied 2-2, and the girls won 3-1 against the Mountain Lions.

"The girls' team played some of their best tennis in all three of the singles matches," said Head Coach Steve Archer. "Our boys' doubles team took control of the court."

At home with the Okanogan Bulldogs on April 26, the boys won 3-2, and the girls lost 3-2.

"Our boys played very well, winning over the Okanogan team," Archer said. "This is impressive because Okanogan is an A school. Our girls were within one match of pulling off a win."

After completing their varsity matches, Archer said, the Raiders played an additional six matches with Okanogan's large team, and LR athletes won all six.

In Tonasket April 30, LR played against the Tigers, with the boys losing 3-2, and the girls losing 4-1.

"The match of the day was Alexia's win over Julie Bello," Archer said. "The match lasted over two-and-a-half hours. Her match was the first to start and the last to finish. The first and third sets were very close, plus during almost every point the girls exchanged several hits back and forth to earn any point. Alexia stormed through the second set 6-1, and then outlasted her opponent in a deciding tie-breaker in the third for the win."

On the boys' side, Archer highlighted Bradley Wilder's win over Tonasket's Kason Tibbs at second singles. "Bradley is a very determined scrappy player," Archer said. "He hustles all the time and gets to balls that others can't. His determination wears down his opponents."

Doubles team Terry Yazzie and Tucker Keeley added another win for a 6-3 win-loss record in league.

The Raiders played in Davenport yesterday against the Gorillas, wrapping up the regular season. Results of that event will will be reported in the next issue of The Star.
