City considers beautification committee

Electric City Councilmember Rich McGuire addressed the issue of the city’s appearance at the July 10 council meeting, and the council may form a committee to improve its appearance at their August meeting.

McGuire said he was responding to a Star newspaper opinion column by Roger Lucas, headlined “Ugliest town in the west can do better.”

“The many eyesores along the entrance to the city stood out like sore thumbs,” Lucas wrote, describing the city in his column. McGuire agreed with the sentiments of the Lucas piece.

“I walk and I walk and I walk, and some of the places that I view when I’m out on a walk in the city would lead me to believe, ‘what is so desirable about buying a residence in the area?,’”McGuire asked. “We’ve got massive amounts of residents that just don’t care about their property. It’s the same with main street. I looked at main street and there’s a lot of stuff that are eyesores on main street. It’s not just homeowners, it’s also the city. We could spend money on weed eating. There are alleyways and access roads just over-growing with weeds.”

The council decided they should work out the details of what a committee would do, and possibly form such a committee, at their August meeting.
