Raider runners compete at state

Wapato makes it to the podium

Hannah Wapato placed 11th and Soarin' Marchand placed 53rd at the state competition for cross country.

Wapato and Marchand each competed in 5,000-meter races at the 1B/2B state competition at Sun WIllows Golf Course in Pasco on Saturday, Nov. 3.

"It was a great day," said Coach Ann Green. "A little cold, cloudy, slightly windy also. The course was slightly different than years before and had at least six tough hills and about 99 percent grass."

"To be honest, I was nervous and anxious for Hannah and Soarin's races," Green continued. "However, once the gun went off and Hannah took off at the start line, it all went away, replaced with feelings of confidence. I was confident they both were going to run great."

Wapato finished 11th out of 116 women with a time of 20 minutes, 39.80 seconds, bringing home LR's only medal of the day, (the top 12 win medals).

"She did outstanding for this only being her second year in cross country," Green said about the senior runner.

The course had started to warm up by the time Marchand lined up with 153 others in his bracket at the starting line.

"He ran ... the hardest he had all season, and left everything out on that course," Green said.

Marchand didn't medal, but at 53rd he placed in the top third of the competition with a time of 18 minutes, 9.6 seconds.

"An amazing accomplishment," Green said, noting it was Marchand's first year in cross country.

Green thanked those from the Colville Tribes who gave donations to the team. She said Wapato and Marchand used some of it to buy themselves some 2018 state tournament attire, among other things.

"It is great to see this support pour in from our community," Green said.
