Marie Kateri Grant, 95, beloved and respected Elder, left us Wednesday morning, February 27, 2019, from Nespelem, Washington. Marie was born Wednesday, January 16, 1924, to Moses and Alice Francis Sherwood-Paine, into one of three Native families living in the Chewelah Valley of Washington state at that time. As a child, Marie remembered her mother made buckskin gloves for Doc Carson, who served the medical needs of the valley families from his horse and buggy. Doc Carson was Marie's inspiration to enter the medical field herself, becoming an LPN and serving patients at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Washington, for 17 years. Nurse Marie especially enjoyed caring for Elders. Just 10 days before Christmas, on Thursday, December 15, 1966, Marie's life forever changed when she married John Grant in Seattle, Washington. A proud member of the Spokane Tribe, Marie retired in 1986 from Colville Tribal Social Services where she served as a File Clerk, Secretary and Administrative Assistant. She belonged to the Catholic Church, the Longhouse Digging and Pitching Society and was a Life Member of American Legion Post 114. For relaxation, Marie enjoyed Beading and Sewing of Traditional Clothing.
