Good manners earn Raiders full stomachs for free

Raiders football players’ good manners were rewarded with a surprise free meal recently.

On their way to a football camp at Eastern Washington University June 30, seven hungry Raiders, accompanied by school board member Butch Stanger, stopped in a café in Creston for breakfast.

A man and his wife sat next to the Raiders and “the boys were yacking with him,” Stanger said.

After the man and his wife were done eating they got up, Stanger recounted, and the man shook his hand and said, “Those are well mannered young men.”

Stanger said they didn’t think much of it at the time until later when the waitress came over.

“She said, ‘Your boys must have made an impression on that man and his wife, because they paid for your meal,’” Stanger recalled.

“We were pleasantly surprised,” Stanger said, adding that the hungry athletes must have consumed over $130 in food.

The seven Lake Roosevelt High School athletes were Xander Ostenberg, Sherwin Vargas, Terrance Saulque, Myka Boyd, Phillip Flett, Harlan Dick, and Tyler Jordan.
