Raiders win third straight football shutout
The Lake Roosevelt Raiders football team defeated the Manson Trojans 41-0 in Coulee Dam Friday, their third straight shutout in a row, for a 3-0 win-loss record.
The Raiders first got on the scoreboard when quarterback Hunter Whitelaw powered his way into the endzone on a short run after the Raiders made their way downfield.
Next, Whitelaw threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Sam Wapato, and then ran a 50-yard touchdown run to end the first quarter with the Raiders up 20-0.
In the second quarter, Tanner Kiser caught the ball and ran about 30 yards to get deep into Manson territory before Brit Egbert ran to about the one-yard line, setting up Whitelaw for another touchdown run.
Later in the second quarter, Egbert had a good punt return, setting up a touchdown pass from Hunter Whitelaw to Tanner Whitelaw to go up 34-0 at the half.
Another touchdown run from Whitelaw in the third quarter put the Raiders up 41-0, the final score.
Egbert and Tanner Whitelaw led the Raider defense with eight tackles each, while Kiser and Wapato each had an interception.
The Raiders play another home game this Saturday, March 27, at 2 p.m. in Coulee Dam against Okanogan.
Soccer wins two
The Lady Raiders soccer team won two home games last week for a 2-2 win-loss record so far this season.
On March 16, they defeated Moses Lake 5-2.
LR led 2-1 at halftime with two goals from Senior Bryn Chaffee. In the second half, LR scored three more goals - two from Chaffee and one from freshman Halle Albert.
"Blossom Armstrong had a shot go just wide of the post but then later had an assist for Bryn Chaffee," Head Coach Micah Esmond noted.
"Halle Albert had eight saves in goal," Esmond said, "with a large amount of our defensive solidity coming from her ability to come out of the box to grab or clear balls up the field when the opposing team was attacking."
Kyona Edmo also excelled at defending LR's goal, Esmond said. "She had one very good save with a very strong left hand. Her reflexes allowed her to drop that hand and stop a ball."
LR defeated Pateros 3-2 March 18 after winning in a penalty kick "shootout."
During regulation, "Pateros twice came from behind to tie it up with us," Esmond said. "Bryn Chaffee had both the goals with solo runs that resulted in her goals."
With the game tied, each team took five penalty style kicks, with LR winning that shootout 4 - 0.
"Pateros shot one penalty over the goal and the rest were saved by Halle [Albert]," Esmond explained. "We had one penalty saved against us but the rest were slotted in perfectly, the best one coming from defender Almeta Desautel."
"Again, Halle Albert made several saves," Esmond added.
The Lady Raiders were scheduled to play Moses Lake again yesterday, this time in Moses Lake.
They play Pateros again, at home in Grand Coulee, March 25 at 4 p.m.
