The saying goes: if you can’t win the debate, change the rules. And that is exactly what the Democrats in Congress are doing. Over the past few weeks, Democrats in Congress have pressed forth numerous pieces of legislation to change the one set of rules we all play by – our Constitution.
They’ve usurped State’s rights in holding fair elections, are trying to turn the federal city of Washington, D.C. into a state to add two more liberal Democrats to the Senate, and now want to add more Supreme Court justices in order to tip court rulings to the left. These are all blatant attacks on our Constitution, and a clear attempt at recreating America as we know it to enact the New Green Deal, raise taxes, institute dramatic increases in government spending, and thereby squeeze out the private sector.
It started with the passage of H.R. 1, the misleadingly named For the People Act. This bill negates a state’s constitutional right to manage its own elections and turns the Federal Election Commission, which oversees campaign spending, into a partisan body. It also funnels your tax dollars to pay for campaigns – whether or not you support them. This is government overreach, plain and simple. I could not be more opposed to this partisan ploy to expand the size of the federal government and erode states’ rights.
That was only the beginning.
This week, the radical Democrats are going to attempt to make Washington, D.C. a state so they can add two more Democrats to the U.S. Senate.
Not only is this bill flatly unconstitutional, but the Founding Fathers intentionally designed the federal seat of government – Washington, D.C. – to be neutral territory, so states could meet on equal footing to conduct the nation’s business. But that doesn’t help the far-left Democrats’ agenda.
And don’t worry, there’s more.
The Biden Administration is continuing these attempts to undermine our Constitution with its commission to “study” structural changes to the Supreme Court. In a time that is more polarized and politically divided than ever, the Administration should strive to preserve our judicial branch’s credibility — not take steps to erode the public’s trust in our judicial system.
Democrat members of the House Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Jerry Nadler, reinforced President Biden’s efforts by introducing legislation to expand the U.S. Supreme Court from nine justices to thirteen. Speaker Pelosi said the idea is “not out of the question.”
While Chairman Nadler maintains that the move is just an attempt at “unpacking” the court, the American people can see this effort for what it is: an attempt to dismantle one of our most trusted and independent institutions, the Supreme Court.
Packing the courts sets the precedent for the judicial branch to be expanded at every transition of power, and the idea to expand the number of Justices has been strongly opposed for decades.
In 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt supported an effort that would add up to six Justices to the Supreme Court with the clear motive of shaping the ideological balance in his favor. The plan was criticized by Americans on both sides of the political aisle and was never adopted into law. Even President Biden has publicly stated that he is against court packing, but his commission to “study” structural changes to the Supreme Court stands.
From attempting to overturn an election that was certified by the state’s bipartisan canvassing board in Iowa’s Second Congressional District to chipping away at limits on executive authority and the lawmaking responsibility that belongs solely to Congress with unilateral executive orders that impact Americans of all walks of life, it is becoming increasingly clear that Democrats in Congress and the Biden Administration are working to undermine our Constitution because they can’t win on the issues.
These proposed changes are antithetical to our beliefs and will have lasting structural impacts on our nation, limiting the opportunities we have now to better ourselves. I am concerned by these attacks and remain committed to preserving our republic by standing up to these un-American ploys.
I will continue to defend our republic and stand in strong opposition to these structural changes that are only being made for political purposes.
