Golf tees off at Oroville, hosts home event

Lake Roosevelt's two golfers tee'd off their season at Oroville last Monday. 

"We had a great day of golf at Oroville," Head Coach Steve Files said. "The weather held and there were 40-plus boys and girls competing from LR, Oroville, Okanogan, Manson, Tonasket, and Warden." 

Raider Daxton Whiteman finished with a score of 84, and Terek Bush finished with a score of 112.

"Dax really played solid, all-around smart golf as his excellent score would suggest," Files said. "He's put a lot of work into his game, both mentally and physically over this past year and it really showed. Terek Bush acquitted himself extremely well in his very first varsity match. He has a very bright future ahead of him."

On Monday, LR hosted 42 participants from Okanogan, Oroville, Warden, and Manson.

"It was Senior Night and Daxton Whiteman's parents, Rena and Derek, very generously prepared food for everyone," Files said. "Jim and Rose Keane, course management, helped immensely, making everyone feel welcome and providing the players and coaches with everything they needed." 

"Daxton celebrated by shooting 86 and winning the event on the boys' side," Files continued. "For an athlete that missed his entire junior season, he has made significant improvement in every aspect of his game. Dax routinely stays after practice and works on his game. He is one of the most dedicated golfers we've had at LR since I've been coaching."

Whiteman's 86 was nine strokes better than Okanogan's Weston Wood and Ryley Moore who both scored 95.

LR's other varsity player, Terek Bush, finished with a score of 108.

The golfers' next event is scheduled for Sage Hills in Warden on April 27.

Tennis competes with Entiat, Tonasket, Oroville 

The Raiders have 26 students playing tennis, and only two who had played in a match before the season's first event, but that didn't stop the Raiders from winning. 

Lake Roosevelt hosted Entiat at the LR tennis courts April 14, when the boys won 4-1 and the girls won 3-2.

"Tennis is off to a quick start," Head Coach Billy Monroe said. "The learning curve for tennis is pretty steep, but the kids are doing great and staying positive."

Then on Saturday, April 17, LR hosted Tonasket and Oroville in "a long day that lasted from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m." according to Monroe. 

Scores were unavailable as of deadline time. 

"The goal of the day was to get every kid a home match, and we made it happen," he said.

Monroe said that he, along with Assistant Coach Danny Mears, "want to say thank you to the Lake Roosevelt Athletic Booster Club for a donation to buy tennis rackets for the program. I was able to buy nine rackets to loan out to kids for the season who needed one. It was a huge help to our program, and we will be able to pass the rackets down year after year." 

Another home tennis match is scheduled for today, April 21, at 4 p.m. against Liberty Bell. An away match is set for Saturday, April 24, at 9 a.m. in Soap Lake.

Track and field

The Lake Roosevelt track and field "had an excellent season opener" in Bridgeport April 19, 

 said Head Coach Lori Adkins. "It was great to see the athletes back out competing in track and field again."

"Sergio Galicia placed in all four of his events and set four personal records as one of many meet highlights," she added.

Carly Neddo finished first in the high jump event with a height of 3 feet 10 inches.

The next track and field event is scheduled for Thursday, April 22, at Liberty Bell High School. 

Baseball loses doubleheader

The Raider baseball team suffered two losses in a doubleheader away game against LIberty Bell Saturday. 

The final scores for the two games were 11-2 and 14-0.

An away game was scheduled against Okanogan yesterday.

A double header is scheduled in Tonasket at 11 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 24.
