The week in Raider sports

Softball loses to Brewster, splits DH with Tonasket

The Lady Raiders' fastpitch team won one and lost two this past week.

Lake Roosevelt lost the April 20 road game against Brewster 13-7.

"Defensively, we had too many errors, racking up nine!" Head Coach Jaci Gross said. "It was a great first game" with "a lot of positives" as well as "a lot of things we need to work on."

"It felt great to have the athletes back on the field after a long absence," she continued. "I think we are all just grateful to be on the field!"

Junior pitcher Emma Marchand struck out six, walked five, and gave up six hits.

Offensively, freshman Sawyer Steffens went 2-4 at bat with a double and a triple, scoring two; freshman Halle Albert went 1-4 with a single and an RBI; junior Audrey Hansen went 1-4 with a double; senior Kyona Edmo went 1-4 with a double; sophomore Arianna Fosnaugh went 1-4 with a single; and freshman Peyton Jake went 2-2 with two singles.

On April 24 in Grand Coulee, LR won one and lost one in a doubleheader with Tonasket.

LR won the first game 5-2. The victory came in large part from Marchand, who hit a homerun in the third inning with two runners on base.

Additional highlights include senior Kyona Edmo and freshman Sawyer Steffens, each hitting a single.

On the mound, Marchand struck out nine, walked one, and gave up three hits.

"This was a great win for this young team," Gross said. "We had our shortstop out for this game, so several kids had to step up and play positions they don't normally play. Super team effort here!"

LR lost the second game 9-7.

During the game, Marchand hit a triple, Steffens hit a single and a double, and eighth-grader Nautika Brown hit a triple.

Pitching, Marchand struck out six, but "Tonasket finally got their timing down and started hitting the ball with 11 hits," Gross explained. "We had some errors with our young team and it

was too much to overcome."

A game was scheduled for yesterday in Omak.

A double header at home is scheduled for Friday, April 30, against Almira-Coulee-Hartline at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Baseball beats Okanogan, loses DH games with Tonasket

The Raider baseball team won a game and lost two last week, defeating Okanogan but losing to Tonasket in a doubleheader.

The Raiders defeated Okanogan 4-1 in a road game on April 20.

"Tanner Kiser had a big two-out single to knock in two runs," Head Coach Billy Nicholson said.

Tyson Nicholson pitched the first five innings for LR, giving up zero runs, and Brit Egbert pitched the final two innings.

"The team played a solid game against Okanogan," Nicholson said. "Everyone contributed to the win."

LR hosted a double header with Tonasket April 24, but lost both games, 13-3 and 16-6.

"Tonasket jumped on both of our starters and never looked back," Nicholson said. "It was a tough doubleheader. We hope to bounce back in our next game."

A triple from Tyson Nicholson was one offensive highlight for LR.

A double header at home is scheduled for Friday, April 30, against Almira-Coulee-Hartline at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Tennis hosts Liberty Bell

The LR tennis team hosted Liberty Bell April 21.

Liberty Bell had only three players at the event, but LR Head Coach Billy Monroe said that it helped to determine the skill levels of LR players.

"Raven Clark played a smart match at number-one girls' singles," he said. "She was able to identify the weaknesses in her opponent's game and exploit it for a victory of 8-5."

About the LR boys, Monroe said, "Chase Marchand stepped up and hustled for every ball. He ended up falling short of a win, losing 8-4" at number-one boys' singles.

"Teyton Flores, at number-two singles, had a very close match with his opponent," Monroe continued. "It was tied 6-6 before Teyton made a few mistakes and lost 8-6. Both boys have a lot of potential and work hard in practice."

"We have a bunch of really young players who are putting in a bunch of extra time, and if they keep up the hard work, they will be a strong team in a while," Monroe added.

LR's next match is scheduled for home in Coulee Dam on April 28 at 4 p.m. against Manson.

Then on Saturday, May 1, LR is scheduled to play Wahluke in Mattawa at 9 a.m., and against Royal in Royal City at 2 p.m.

Track competes at Liberty Bell

The LR track and field team competed in a meet hosted by Liberty Bell April 22, when Sergio Galicia won the discus with a throw of 109 feet, 5 inches, ran the 400-meter in 1 minute, 3.1 seconds earning a fourth place, and placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 99 feet, 3 inches.

Raeley Portch placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 21.6 seconds, followed by Carly Neddo who placed sixth with a time of 22.6 seconds.

Chelsea Dudley placed fourth in the discus with a 74-4 throw and turned in a season record in the shot put with a distance of 23-10.

Neddo placed third in the javelin with a 69-foot throw.

"Our athletes continued to train and compete hard this week," Head Coach Lori Adkins said. "Their marks and times are improving as a result. Every LR athlete set at least one PR (personal record) at Liberty Bell."

"Although our season is abbreviated, you would never know," Adkins continued. "The athletes across all schools seem to be goal driven and improving during competition to normal levels. The meet atmospheres have been really fun. It seems like athletes, coaches, officials and fans are appreciative that we are back out for track and field."

The next track meet is scheduled for 4 p.m. on April 29 in Bridgeport.
