Students flex their brains at Knowledge Bowl event

Lake Roosevelt Knowledge Bowl participants traveled to Tonasket for their second meet on Jan. 10.

While there, members Virgil Bearcub, Noah Hunt, Kailah Leadingham, and Peyton Robison competed against teams from Manson, Omak, Pateros, Okanogan, and Tonasket.

“LR’s second ever competition was challenging, but the team managed to beat one of the Manson teams in this go-around,” said Pam Johnson, a teacher at LR who oversees the group.

“New this time was a written component, with the entire team pouring over tough, multiple-choice items on a broad set of subjects,” she said. “After one set of questions, an exhilarated team reported that their practice had paid off — they were able to report the meaning of E Pluribus Unum for a tough-won point.”

“E Pluribus Unum,” which is printed on U.S. coins, is Latin for “Out of Many, One,” and was the national motto until Congress changed it to “In God We Trust” in 1956.
