There are multiple political races in local counties, including for sheriff positions, county commissioners, judges, clerks, and more.
An Aug. 2 primary will narrow any races with more than two candidates down to just two, and the general election will take place on Nov. 8.
In Grant County, running for sheriff are three Republicans: James Baker of Moses Lake, Joe Harris of Quincy, and Joey Kriete of Ephrata. Current Sheriff Tom Jones announced Tuesday that he is retiring July 1.
Okanogan County also has three Republicans running for sheriff: Tony Hawley of Okanogan, Kevin Newport of Omak, and Paul Budrow of Twisp.
Lincoln County has five Republicans running for sheriff: Jeff Barden of Deer Meadows, Andy Manke of Seven Bays, and Brian Telford, Gabe Gants and Adam Johnson, all from Davenport.
Douglas County, on the other hand, only has one candidate for sheriff, Republican Kevin Morris of Bridgeport
In Grant County, running for county assessor are Republican incumbent Melissa McKnight of Ephrata and independent James Liebrecht of Moses Lake.
Running for county auditor are Republican Michele Jaderlund of Ephrata and independent Richard Stevens of Ephrata.
Running for county clerk are incumbent Kimberly Allen, Ulises Infante, and Marala Roduner, all Republicans from Ephrata.
Marc Finn of Grand Coulee is the lone candidate for Republican precinct committee officer in Grand Coulee's precinct 018.
Some races are unopposed, with only one candidate registered to run: Republican Craig Morrison of Moses Lake wants to be re-elected for county coroner; Republican Kevin McCrae of Moses Lake is seeking the county prosecutor office; and independent Darryl Pheasant, who already holds the position, wants to remain county treasurer.
In Okanogan County, several positions have unopposed Republican candidates as the only ones registered, including for assessor, Larry Gilman of Omak; for auditor, Cari Hall of Okanogan; Susan Speiker of Oroville for clerk; Jeanie Hughes of Tonasket for coroner; and Albert Lin of Omak for prosecutor.
The race for Congressional District #4, which includes Douglas, Okanogan, Grant, Yakima, Franklin, Benton, and Adams, and part of Walla Walla County, has eight candidates - seven Republicans and one Democrat, the winner of which will serve in the U.S. Congress in D.C.
Incumbent Republican Dan Newhouse of Yakima is being challenged by fellow Republicans Corey Gibson of Selah, Loren Culp of Moses Lake, Brad Klippert of Kennewick, Jacek Kobiesa of Pasco, Benny Garcia III of Sunnyside, Jerrod Sessler of Prosser, and Democratic candidate Doug White of Yakima.
