People from the surrounding area plan to welcome to a small group of visiting Welsh descendants from the Seattle area in an informal outdoor gathering at the Willows Motel in Wilbur Friday night, Sept. 9, at 6, according to organizer Judy Lindhag.
Everyone is invited and advised to bring a lawn chair, beverage, and their favorite charcuterie style nibbles to share.
During the weekend, there will be a presentation of the Welsh in the area, a headstone restoration event at a Welsh cemetery seven miles northwest of Almira, along with planting of daffodils, a Welsh flower, Lindhag said.
Planned are a caravan-style drive to the cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
At 11:30 the group will travel to the side of the road near what was once called “Williams Grove” northeast of Almira, for a noon picnic lunch where the Welsh came for their annual Fourth of July picnic, baseball games, and more.
The afternoon is left open for those who might need to rest or visit the Wilbur Museum, Lindhag said, then a no-host dinner is scheduled at Big Bend Golf Course at 6 p.m. More review of Welsh history and stories will ensue.
Special thanks are extended to all eight of the volunteers who labored two weeks ago clearing weeds, filling holes, and more to make the event happen, including Cindy (Williams) Rhode, Almira; Nancy Evans, Almira; Timi (Winfrey) Erickson; Mike Franklin; Allen Cobble; and Mark Cramer, all of Hartline; plus David and Judy (Evans) Lindhag, now of Ford.
