New group invites all to free barbecue

Raising awareness about Type 1 Diabetes

After their daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes last year, they're forming a new group to bring awareness about the disease and to support kids who have it.

The group, with the help of donors, are putting on a free barbecue at Grand Coulee's park on SR-174 near La Presa. And they had a table at last week's National Night Out event in Grand Coulee to promote the effort.

Kinzley Dennis got the diagnosis one day after she turned 10 last November, said her dad and the group's president, Michael Dennis.

Dennis said they met the Kindred Spirits Against Diabetes Motorcycle Organization at a motorcycle show in Spokane last March, which had an immediate positive effect on Kinzley.

"She rides with me all the time and she thought it was awesome there's a club supporting diabetics like her," he commented on the Spokane group's Facebook page.

He said he later met with the KSAD national president and inquired about joining them.

"Instead, I ... was asked to form a new chapter to spread the word and raise awareness on this horrible disease," he told The Star.

The group is planning a free community barbecue on Sunday, Aug. 20 from 1-4 p.m. at the newly remodeled Grand Coulee City Park.

"All are invited to come out for free food and enjoy the day," Dennis said, noting, "This is being done by donations from many local businesses."
