Body found on Omak Mountain

Less than an hour after a caller reported a blanket-wrapped, badly smelling object on Omak Mountain Aug. 9, Colville Tribal Police found a woman’s body that still has not been identified.

Okanogan County Dispatch transferred a call to Tribal Dispatch about 5:25 p.m. The original caller reported being in the Omak Mountain area and seeing what appeared to be a blanket wrapped around something, covered with dirt and sticks, and which had the odor of a dead animal.

Tribal police responded and searched the area. At about 6:12 p.m., tribal law enforcement located the area and discovered a partially buried body, Police Chief Steve Brown’s office said in a press release.

The FBI and coroner’s office were notified and the area was secured the next day.

A Washington State Patrol crime scene unit assisted the tribe processing the scene and recovering evidence.

It is believed the body is that of an adult Caucasian female. No identification has been made at this point; law enforcement will continue to investigate.

Several law enforcement agencies were contacted about potential missing individuals matching the description of the deceased. No matches were found.
