Carol Ann McDermott

On January 16th, 2024, Carol Ann McDermott reunited with the love of her life, Sham, and her cherished sons: Dan and Kyle. She leaves behind a son Jim, and daughter Kendra.

Carol's 84 vibrant years began in Chicago, Illinois. Born to parents Charles and Norma Larson, she was the second of three to arrive, after her big sister, Joan. They were soon joined by another sister, Gloria. Carol and her sisters shared an unbreakable bond that would last the rest of their lives. Their conversations would often involve much laughter and playful bantering over the Sunday crossword puzzle.

Carol eventually made her way to upstate New York, where she fell in love with Sham and became an official member of the McDermott clan. They soon had two boys: Jim and Dan, who enjoyed time with their many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Work eventually brought the new family to Florida, where Kendra and Kyle were born. As a stay-at-home mom, most days were filled with wrangling four rambunctious kids, letting "pet" alligators loose, and emptying the pool of other newfound creatures. Her love of the sun and water was passed to her children, who still seek opportunities to enjoy a day at the beach. Weekends were spent together as a family, a theme that would continue for many years.

Another work opportunity presented itself in Coulee Dam, Washington, and so a new adventure began. With the prospect of experiencing the four seasons, Carol and Sham set off on a cross-country drive with their young kids, a feat worthy of an award.

It was in Coulee Dam where Carol and Sham made most of their lifelong friends. She enjoyed entertaining folks on the deck or at the card table, where laughter could be heard from outside. During the holidays she loved to decorate the house and make it festive for family and friends. Bundling up the kids for fun in the snow became a favorite Christmas tradition.

Carol's later years were spent in Spokane, Washington, where she enjoyed much-earned rest and relaxation. She continued to cherish her philosophical and laugh-filled conversations with family and friends, and she never missed an opportunity to compare notes on the Sunday crossword puzzle.

Although Carol is sorely missed, these memories bring comfort. A combined Celebration of Life for Carol and Kyle will be planned at a future date.
