Searchers on Tuesday recovered the body of a young man missing in Banks Lake since Thursday.
From Tacoma, Daniel Ciobanu, 28, and his wife had been riding a paddleboard near Coulee City when a breeze came up and they fell into the water in a spot "filled with very thick aquatic vegetation," according to a Grant County Sheriff's Office Facebook post. "The woman made it to shore, but the man went under and didn't resurface. First responders were called right away."
That was about 8:30 a.m. They searched until about 3:30 p.m., then decided to come back the next morning to search for his body, including by boat or personal-size watercraft and even using drones.
At least seven agencies were involved in the recovery, including the Coulee City Fire Department, Grant County Fire District 6, Grant County Fire District #7, Grant County Sheriff's Office, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, Okanogan County Search and Rescue, and the federal Bureau of Land Management.
Grant County Coroner Craig Morrison identified Ciobanu, the sheriff's office said Tuesday, The coroner's staff will perform an autopsy to confirm the cause and manner of death.
