Raider Roundup

Soccer

With lots of youth on their side, the Lady Raiders soccer team is off to a rough start at 0-3 with losses to Bridgeport, Liberty Bell, and Brewster out of the way and lots of learning going on.

Coach Solveig Chaffee notes the squad of 17 includes "6 talented 8th graders and 9 players seeing their first high school soccer action."

They made two goals in each game this week - 5-2 against Bridgeport, 4-2 against Liberty Bell, 10-2 against Brewster last night.

Chaffee said team Captain Nautika Brown scored against Bridgeport, as did Halle Picard with an assist by Phenyx Marchand.

Against Liberty Bell at home Saturday, Shae Crollard scored with an assist by Brown. Picard made a goal, assisted by Marchand.

The coach noted she was seeing "excellent leadership" from goalie Cora Nicholson, experienced defensive specialist.

Losses aside, the team exhibits more teamwork and better skills among more players than they did last year, if the game against Liberty Bell was any indication.

Football

The Raider football team has suffered two losses to start the 2024 season, neither of them in league.

LR lost 28-8 to Colfax at home Sept. 6, then to Reardan last Friday night, 22-0.

They'll face Brewster at home this Friday at 7 p.m. before taking to the road for the next four games.

They won't be back to play in Coulee Dam until Oct. 25 to host Tonasket.

The Raider roster shows a big turnout with 29 athletes, 14 of them seniors.

Nevertheless, many of them have had to sit out the first two games due to ineligibility. Coach Geary Oliver said it was all due to not having enough practices in by game time.

About 15 of them sat out the Colfax game for that reason.

Volleyball

With an early 3-0 win against Wilson Creek, the Lady Raider Volleyball team has notched 1-2 season so far. They lost 3-0 to Reardan Sept. 12, then to Liberty Bell last night, Sept. 17, 3-1.

But they can make up for those losses somewhere in their 17-game season schedule.

They head to Nine Mile Falls tonight, Sept. 18; travel to Manson Sept. 19, then host Wilson Creek on Monday Sept. 23. See the rest of it in the special section on Fall Sports in this issue.

Their new coach, Faye Butler, has them working hard.

Cross Country

Lake Roosevelt's harriers consist of 15 boys and 6 girls who can compete in nine cross country meets, including three in post season.

Last weekend they went to Shadle Park High School for the massive 40-team Highlander Invitational.

This weekend they will take part in the annual Can/Am Invitational in Kettle Falls.
